Stardew Valley cheats and cheat codes

Stardew Valley has no cheat console to type into, but there is a method that uses the game's own name fields, and it really works. When you give your animal an item code in square brackets as its name, that item lands in your inventory. It needs no mods and works on PC and mobile. On PlayStation, Xbox and Switch, it was closed off in the 1.3 update. Below we have gathered the method, the codes that work and the game's own advanced options.

How do you open the cheat console?

Your choice is remembered

Stardew Valley has no cheat console that opens with a key. Instead of cheats, the game's name fields are used. When you buy an animal and name it with an item code in square brackets, the game reads that code and gives you the item.

Animal name field
  1. Buy an animal from Marnie's Ranch.
  2. When asked for a name, type the item code in square brackets, for example [74].
  3. If you want more than one item, you can type the codes one after another, for example [645][446].
  4. The moment you confirm, the items land in your inventory.

You can use the same method again and again by renaming the animal later.

[74]

This is an item code, typed as an animal name with the square brackets included. Number 74 is one of the most valuable gems in the game, so try it first to check that the method works.

  • The method needs no mods and works on PC and mobile. It was closed off in the PlayStation, Xbox and Switch versions.
  • Only basic item numbers are read, so not every item in the game can be obtained this way.
  • You can use it many times on the same save by renaming the animal.

Common questions

Are there cheats in Stardew Valley?
Yes. There are no console commands to type, but a method that uses the game's name fields does the job. When you give your animal an item code in square brackets as its name, that item lands in your inventory.
Do I need a mod for the name trick?
No. The method uses the game's own name field and works on PC and mobile. On PlayStation, Xbox and Switch, it was closed off in the 1.3 update.
What is the Stardew Valley money cheat?
There is no code that gives money directly. Instead, you get gem and expensive item codes with the name trick and sell them. The result is the same.
How many times can I use the cheat?
As many as you like. When you rename the animal, the codes are read again, so you can get as many items as you want with a single animal on the same save.
Can I get every item this way?
No. The method only reads basic item numbers, so not every item in the game comes through this way. If you type a code and the item does not arrive, that item does not work with this method.
Is there no way to use console commands?
The community has a modding framework that offers console commands, but it is not an official feature, it needs to be installed and it only works on PC. Since the name trick needs no mods, most players find it more practical.
