Stardew Valley: Name trick

This is the only real Stardew Valley cheat that needs no mods. The game reads numbers in square brackets in name fields as item codes and gives you that item. Buy a chicken from Marnie, name it [74] and a valuable gem drops into your inventory. Because you can rename the animal later, you can repeat it as many times as you like on the same save.

Most codes here need cheats turned on first. See the section on how to open the console.

Name trick: Common questions

How does the name trick work?
Buy an animal from Marnie, and when you reach the naming screen, type the item code in square brackets. The game reads the code and puts that item in your inventory. You can type several codes one after another.
Can I use the same trick again?
Yes. After buying the animal, you can walk up to it and rename it. The codes are read again with every new name, so you can use it many times with a single animal.
Does it work on consoles and mobile too?
It works on mobile and needs no mods. On PlayStation, Xbox and Switch, however, item codes in names were closed off in the 1.3 update, so the method does not work there.
