Bannerlord cheats and cheat codes

Using cheats in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord takes two steps. First you turn on cheat mode in a config file, then you either use key combinations or open the developer console and type commands. The key combinations are useful in battle, while the console commands cover everything on the campaign side, such as money, skills, troops and settlements. Below, we have split them up by where they work.

How do you open the cheat console?

Your choice is remembered

Cheat mode is not turned on from inside the game but from a config file in your Documents folder. Without editing this file, neither the key combinations nor the console commands work. Once cheat mode is on, you can open the developer console with Alt + ~ and type commands.

Alt + ~ opens the console
  1. With the game closed, go to Documents > Mount and Blade II Bannerlord > Configs.
  2. Open engine_config.txt with Notepad, change the line cheat_mode = 0 to cheat_mode = 1 and save.
  3. Start the game. The key combinations work from this point on.
  4. To type commands, press Alt and ~ together and the developer console opens.
  5. Type the command and press Enter. The console is case sensitive, so type the command exactly as shown.

If you do not want to edit the config file, you can also turn on cheat mode by opening the console and typing config.cheat_mode 1, but this only lasts for that session.

cheat_mode = 1

In your Documents folder, go to Mount and Blade II Bannerlord > Configs and open engine_config.txt with Notepad. Change the line cheat_mode = 0 to cheat_mode = 1 and save. The folder name is the one the game creates itself, so it appears exactly like this.

  • Cheats only work in the PC version and in the single-player campaign.
  • The console is case sensitive. If you mistype a command, it returns an error and the game does not break.
  • Command names can change with game updates. If a command does not work, type its name in the console followed by help to see the format it expects.
  • None of the campaign commands work while cheat mode is off, so you need to edit the file first.

Common questions

How do you turn on cheats in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord?
In your Documents folder, go to Mount and Blade II Bannerlord > Configs, open engine_config.txt, change the line cheat_mode = 0 to cheat_mode = 1 and save. Without this step, neither the key combinations nor the console commands work.
How do you open the console?
After turning on cheat mode, press Alt and ~ together in game. On a US keyboard, the tilde key sits above Tab.
I type a command but it does not work.
There are three common reasons. You may not have turned on cheat mode, you may have typed the command with the wrong upper or lower case, or the command may not have received the parameter it expects. Run the command with help added after it and the console shows the correct format.
Does using cheats disable achievements?
Yes. Bannerlord turns off achievements while cheat mode is on, so you cannot earn any during that time. If you want to collect achievements, keep cheat mode off.
Do cheats work in multiplayer?
No. Both the key combinations and the console commands only apply in the single-player campaign.
Will my save file get corrupted?
The cheats are the game's own developer tools, so they do not damage your save file. Still, commands such as giving settlements and declaring war permanently change the political balance of the map, so it is a good idea to make a manual save first.
Do command names change with updates?
They can. If a command works one day and gives an error the next, its name or the parameter it expects has most likely changed. Typing the command in the console followed by help is the quickest way to check.
Are they the same as the Warband cheats?
Not entirely. Some combinations, such as healing, stayed the same, but knocking out all enemies changed from Ctrl + Shift + F4 to Ctrl + Alt + F4, and instead of Warband's money key, Bannerlord uses a console command.
