Hearts of Iron IV cheats and cheat codes

In Hearts of Iron 4, cheats work as console commands. You open the console with a single key, type the command and press Enter. The range is wide, from adding political power and instant construction to switching countries and winning wars. The only condition is that you are not playing in Ironman mode. The archive below sorts the commands into categories.

How do you open the cheat console?

Your choice is remembered

The HOI4 console opens with the key in the top-left corner of the keyboard. This key can change with your keyboard layout, so on a non-US keyboard you may need to try alternative key combinations.

~ or Shift + 2
  1. While in the game, press the ~ key in the top-left corner of the keyboard.
  2. If it does not open, try Shift + 2 or Shift + 3, as it depends on your keyboard layout.
  3. Type the command and press Enter.

On non-US keyboard layouts the tilde key may be in a different place. If the console never opens, temporarily switch your keyboard layout to US English.

add_political_power 1000

This command adds 1000 political power. Try it first to check that the console works.

  • The console is completely disabled in Ironman mode, and no command works.
  • Using the console disables achievements on that save.
  • Some commands can permanently upset the game's balance, so it is a good idea to make a separate save before you experiment.

Common questions

How do I open the Hearts of Iron 4 console?
Press the ~ key in the top-left corner of the keyboard. If it does not open, try Shift + 2 or Shift + 3, as it depends on your keyboard layout. If you still have trouble on a non-US keyboard, you can temporarily switch your layout to US English.
Can I use cheats in Ironman mode?
No. The console is completely disabled in Ironman mode, and no command works. If you want to use cheats, you need to start a save with Ironman turned off.
Does using the console disable achievements?
Yes, achievements are disabled on a save where you use the console. Achievements already require Ironman, and the console is disabled in Ironman, so you cannot have both at once.
Where do I find country tags?
Country tags have three letters, for example TUR for Türkiye, GER for Germany and SOV for the Soviet Union. You can see the tag in the game when you hover over a country or on the war screen.
I typed a command but it did not work.
The most common causes are a typo or a missing parameter. Most commands need a number or a country tag at the end. The console shows a warning for a wrong command, and reading it usually solves the problem.
Which commands can break a save?
Commands with lasting effects, such as annexing, switching countries and deleting units, can change the game's balance in ways you cannot undo. We recommend making a separate save before you try them.
