🛡️ Minecraft armor recipes

How much material does each armor piece take, and how much does it protect? Every armor recipe from leather to netherite is here.

Minecraft 26.3  26 craftable items · recipes from the game's own files

Armor has four pieces: Helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots. The material count is always the same: Chestplate eight, leggings seven, helmet five, boots four. These numbers do not change for leather, iron, gold or diamond; only the material does.

If you only make one piece, the chestplate gives the most protection, followed by the leggings. When diamonds are scarce, make the chestplate first instead of the whole set.

Netherite armor is not crafted on a table: You upgrade a diamond piece with a netherite ingot and an upgrade template at a Smithing Table. The shield is a separate defensive tool; it is made from an iron ingot and planks and can be decorated with a banner.

Common questions

How many diamonds does a full diamond armor set take?

The four pieces add up to twenty-four diamonds: Chestplate eight, leggings seven, helmet five, boots four. A netherite upgrade needs ingots on top of that.

Does a shield count as armor?

No, it gives no armor points. Hold it and right-click to block damage from the front; it stops arrows and most of a creeper explosion.
