What is Copper Chestplate used for?
The copper chestplate is the body piece of the armor set that came with the copper update. It is stronger than leather and weaker than iron: A cheap defense meant for the early days before you reach iron.
It takes eight copper ingots in the classic chestplate layout: The middle of the top row stays empty and the two rows below are full. Because it needs three rows, you make it on a crafting table, not in your inventory.
You can repair it at an anvil with copper ingots, or let Mending restore it with experience. Smelting it is not efficient: An armor piece that took eight ingots gives back only one copper nugget in a furnace.
