What is Copper Boots used for?
Copper boots are the cheapest piece of the set: They take four copper ingots, which means smelting just a couple of copper ores. In armor points they sit with gold boots and below iron; their difference is durability.
The layout is the classic boots recipe: The top and middle squares of the left and right columns are filled and the middle column stays empty. Because the recipe is three columns wide, you make it on a crafting table, not in your inventory.
Their real value shows up in enchanting. Feather Falling works regardless of the armor's base protection, and since copper is plentiful, copper boots are the cheapest way to try that enchantment. They are cheap life insurance for deep cave trips or your first steps in the Nether; when you are done, smelt them in a furnace to get a copper nugget back.
