What is Shield used for?
The shield is the core defensive item in Minecraft. It is made from six planks and one iron ingot; hold it in your off hand and keep right-click pressed to block most damage coming from the front.
It works against arrows, fireballs, explosions and melee attacks. An enemy with an axe can disable it for five seconds, though, so it is not enough on its own in a fight.
You can combine a shield with a banner to print your own pattern on it; this is purely cosmetic and does not change its defense.
