🕯️ Minecraft decoration and lighting recipes
Some blocks hold the house up, others make it a home: Light sources, carpets, beds and banner recipes are here.
Lighting is not just about looks: Hostile mobs spawn on dark blocks. The torch is the cheapest fix, with one coal and one stick giving four. The lantern lasts longer and looks tidier, and it also survives water; the soul variants give light in a different color.
On the decoration side, banners, carpets and candles all work the same way: Change the wool or dye and the recipe stays the same, only the color changes. Patterns on banners are a separate layer added at the loom.
Every item in the list below has its own page; there you see the recipe as it looks on the grid and which recipes use that item as an ingredient.

Common questions
How many torches do you need to stop mobs spawning?
In modern versions hostile mobs only spawn on blocks with light level zero. Placing torches roughly every seven blocks on flat ground stops spawning completely.
Is a lantern better than a torch?
A lantern is not put out by water, can hang from the ceiling and looks cleaner, but it needs iron. Torches are much cheaper. Use torches until your base is set up, lanterns after that.
