Everything that shortens a long trip: Rail types, minecarts and boats; what each is made from and how many you get.

Rail systems rely on iron, which makes them expensive early on. Normal rails carry, powered rails speed up, detector rails give a signal when a minecart passes over them and activator rails trigger what is inside the cart. On flat ground, a powered rail roughly every thirty blocks is enough for long lines.

The minecart itself is five iron; add a chest, hopper, furnace or TNT on top to change what it does. A minecart with a chest is the cheapest way to haul a mine's load in one trip.

Travel by water is much cheaper: A boat takes five planks and there is a version with a chest. A boat on ice is one of the fastest ways to travel in the game.

Common questions

How often should I place powered rails?

Roughly every thirty blocks on flat ground. On lines going uphill you need to space them closer, or the minecart slows down and stops.

Can you craft a saddle?

No, the saddle has no crafting recipe. You find it in chests, catch it while fishing or buy it from villagers. It has a page in the tool, but no crafting recipe.
