📦 Minecraft material and intermediate recipes
Under every big recipe sits an intermediate material: Sticks, planks, ingots, paper. This page shows where that chain begins.
Materials are not much use on their own, but they appear in almost every recipe. You cannot make tools without sticks, a table without planks or armor without ingots. That is why reading from here is the most efficient start for someone new to the game.
Most ingots have more than one route: Smelt the ore, break down the block or combine the nuggets. On each item's own page you see all the alternatives side by side and pick based on what you have.
If you wonder how many raw materials an item takes in total, the from-scratch section on item pages opens the recipe into its ingredients, then theirs, and gives you the total.

Common questions
How many planks does one log give?
One log gives four planks, and two planks make four sticks. So a single log can give you up to eight sticks, more than enough for tools in your first minutes.
Is it better to smelt ore or break down a block?
Both give the same ingot. Smelting needs fuel but gives experience; breaking down a block is instant. If you are short on fuel, going from the block is faster.
