What is Torch used for?
The torch is Minecraft's most basic light source and probably the thing you will craft most. One coal (or charcoal) and one stick give four.
It has a light level of 14 and stops hostile mobs from spawning in the dark. Make plenty from day one for digging caves, marking the way back to base and not getting caught outside at night.
If you cannot find coal, charcoal does the same job: Cook a log in a furnace to get charcoal, and you can use wood as the fuel too. So for your first night, trees are all you need.
