Changing your CS2 name takes 3 steps. The game itself has no separate name field; you make the change in your Steam profile and the game client syncs it right away.
How to write a fancy nickname in CS2

1
Use the generator
Type the name you want into the box in the tool above. It creates hundreds of styles. Press the Copy button next to the one you like and the nickname goes to your clipboard.
-
2
Edit your Steam profile
Open the Steam client. Click your username at the top right and choose Profile. On your profile page, press Edit Profile. The first field in the form is Profile Name.
-
3
Paste and Save
Paste the nickname into the Profile Name box. Press the Save button at the bottom of the page. Your new name shows in your next CS2 match and on the scoreboard. The change is free.
Important: The limit is 32 BYTES, not 32 characters
Steam allows 2 to 32 bytes for a profile name. That is not a character count; Unicode characters take different numbers of bytes:
- English letters and numbers: 1 byte, so 32 characters fit
- Accented letters (é, ü, ñ, ø): 2 bytes, so about 16 characters fit
- Fancy Unicode (꧁꧂, ★, ♛, 彡): 2 to 3 bytes, so about 10 to 16 characters
- Chinese, Japanese and Korean: 3 bytes, so about 10 characters
The limit can feel off compared to how long the name looks; keep the byte count in mind while designing.
Fancy symbols that work in CS2
The Steam profile name supports most of Unicode, which makes it ideal for fancy nicknames. The only practical limit is byte length. Stable groups that were tested:
Square brackets and frames
Always work and are byte efficient: 【】 『』 〘〙 〖〗 ◤◥ ◣◢
Ornate brackets
Popular in the CS2 scene, but expensive in bytes: ꧁꧂ ༺༻ ❰❱ ⫷⫸
Decoration symbols
Single decorative characters (usually 3 bytes): ★ ✦ ♛ ☠ ⚔ ➤ 彡 乂
Mathematical bold, italic and small caps
The profile name is open in CS2, so these work well for a social media feel: 𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚, 𝘒𝘐𝘕𝘎, ᴋɪɴɢ (byte heavy)
CS2 name warnings
Steam may read rapid name changes as a bot or cheat signal and apply a short cooldown. Names that break Valve's Terms of Service (swearing, racism, impersonating other players or admins) can get a forced profile reset after community reports. There is no VAC ban risk, but community restrictions can follow.

CS2 name rules and the Steam profile limit
The basic rule for a Steam profile name is 2 to 32 bytes. That is a physical byte count; Unicode characters are stored in different sizes. Nearly every character and symbol is accepted, as long as the total stays at 32 bytes or less.
Steam community rules ban swearing, racism and names that impersonate other players or Valve staff. Violations are judged on reports; the result can be a forced profile name reset or a community ban. A VAC ban is only given for technical cheating, never for a name.
CS2 vs PUBG nicknames
The two games take completely different approaches to names:
- Where it lives: The CS2 name comes from your Steam profile, with no separate in-game field. PUBG has a single in-game field tied to no other platform.
- Type of limit: CS2 counts bytes (32 bytes), and accented letters take 2 bytes. PUBG counts characters (4 to 16), and an accented letter counts as 1.
- Cost: CS2 (Steam) is completely free. PUBG needs a Rename Card bought with UC for every change.
- Unicode tolerance: CS2 (Steam) is much more flexible than PUBG; mathematical bold and italic styles work too.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change my name inside CS2?
No, CS2 has no separate in-game name. The name in matches and on the scoreboard is your Steam profile name. Change your Steam profile name and your CS2 name updates too.
What is the Steam profile name character limit?
The limit is 2 to 32 BYTES (not characters). An English letter takes 1 byte, so 32 characters fit. Accented letters take 2 bytes, so about 16 fit. Chinese, Japanese and Korean take 3 bytes, so 10 or 11 fit.
Does a fancy nickname cost anything?
No, changing your Steam profile name is completely free and unlimited. Rapid changes can be slowed down by Steam with a temporary cooldown.
Do fancy Unicode symbols work?
Yes. Steam accepts most of Unicode; ornate brackets, square brackets, mathematical bold and italic, almost everything works. The only limit is byte length.
Can I get banned because of my nickname?
Not with a VAC ban; VAC is only for technical cheating. But names that break Valve's TOS (swearing, impersonation, racism) can bring a community ban or a forced name reset after reports.
