🛡️ Minecraft server commands
It is your server: Every permission, ban, whitelist and backup command, along with the permission level each one needs.
If you run a server for friends, three commands from this group are enough: Granting permissions, kicking and the whitelist. While the whitelist is on, only the people you added to the list can join; it is the easiest way to stop unwanted logins.
Banning and kicking get mixed up: Kicking only cuts the connection, and the player can rejoin right away. A ban is permanent and is only lifted with the pardon command. IP bans are a separate list and should be used carefully, because they can also affect innocent players on the same network.
The right order for a backup is this: First turn off autosave, then write everything to disk, copy the files and finally turn saving back on. If you forget to turn saving back on and the server crashes, all progress from that period is lost.

Common questions
How do I give my friend operator permissions?
Just type /op playername. The permission level is set by the op-permission-level value in the server settings, and its default is the highest level.
How do I shut down the server safely?
Use the /stop command. It saves the world and shuts down properly; force-killing the process can lead to data loss.
