Sports games
The genre that brings the rules and rivalry of real sports to the screen.

What is the sports genre?
Sports games bring the rules, venues and often the real rosters of sports like football, basketball, tennis and combat sports into a digital form. The genre's strength is that it rests on a rivalry that already exists: You already know the rules, so you can focus on playing instead of learning.
Modern sports games do not stop at the pitch. Career modes, transfer markets, squad building and online leagues shift the weight of the game toward management as well. On one side there is the simulation approach that aims for realism, and on the other arcade-style sports games that bend the rules.
What defines it?
The rules of the real sport form the base of the game, so it takes little time to learn.
Real team, player and tournament licenses are a major battleground in the genre.
Next to the on-pitch play there are layers of seasons, transfers and squad building.
Many series release a new edition every season with updated rosters.

Frequently asked questions
Is a sports game different from a sports simulation?
The line is blurry, but in practice the simulation side puts real tactics and physics first, while the arcade side puts flow and spectacle first. They are two takes on the same sport.
Do I need to buy the new edition every year?
No. Yearly editions mostly differ in updated rosters and balance tweaks. If you want to play online, the latest edition may make more sense, since the player base moves to it.
