Fighting games
A competitive genre where two opponents meet at close range, built on combos, spacing and reads.

What is the fighting genre?
Fighting games happen in a small space but have enormous depth. On the surface two characters throw punches; underneath, a game of chess is being played on spacing, on how many frames each move lasts, on reading the opponent's habits and on breaking their defense at the right moment.
The genre was born in arcades and is now one of the oldest branches of the esports scene. New releases keep the technical depth the core audience expects while opening the door to newcomers with simplified combo inputs and strong training modes.
What defines it?
Knowing your attack range and keeping the opponent out of theirs is the basic skill.
Moves chain together; doing the input correctly and on time takes mastery.
Predicting the opponent's next move matters as much as reflexes.
Every character has different range, speed and pressure tools; each matchup is learned on its own.

Frequently asked questions
Is a fighting game the same as a beat 'em up?
No. In a fighting game you usually face a single opponent in a limited arena. In a beat 'em up you clear crowds of enemies as you move forward.
Is it hard to get into fighting games?
The first hours can be overwhelming, because the genre makes the knowledge gap between you and your opponent felt right away. Training modes and simplified control options in modern games lower that barrier considerably.
