Sony has released a new PS5 system update less than two weeks before GTA 6 launches on November 19. Version 26.07-14.22.00 is reportedly required to play Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) on PS5.

According to information compiled by Oyun Günlüğü, the 1.267 GB update released on November 2 comes with a single patch note: “We’ve made some security fixes to the system software.” The update arrived just 11 days after version 14.20, which was released on October 21. According to PlayStation Game Size, which tracks PlayStation Store backend data, PS5 consoles will need version 14.22.00.00 to run GTA 6. In early October, the requirement was said to be version 14.10.00.00. Rockstar Games has not officially announced the game’s minimum firmware requirement yet.

Sony’s game of whack-a-mole with the jailbreak scene

Sony’s rapid-fire updates come as efforts to jailbreak the PS5 gather pace. In late September, a jailbreak supporting firmware versions 7.00 through 13.60 was released for all PS5 models, including the PS5 Pro. Since jailbroken consoles can run unauthorized software, this can also open the door to piracy. After some PS5 games began requiring firmware 14.00 to download updates, jailbreak efforts shifted to newer system software. A prominent member of the PlayStation homebrew community has demonstrated a jailbreak on firmware 14.10, though follow-up comments indicated that dumping game executables was not possible with that method.

AI-assisted tools that make it easier to open up the console are adding to Sony’s challenge. There are concerns that if a jailbreak becomes available for the firmware required by GTA 6, the game could be pirated on PS5 and possibly even made available on PC. Sony may also release further security updates before November 19. Meanwhile, one hacker privately reported an exploit to Sony and received a $50,000 reward instead of sharing it with the community.

Preloading starts November 12

Preloading for GTA 6 digital pre-orders begins on November 12. The game was previously reported to take up 210 GB on PS5. Players using their consoles normally are advised to install the 14.22 update before preloading begins.
