PlayStation Store is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Sony Interactive Entertainment has launched the 20 Years of PlayStation Store Showcase, featuring discounted games and a curated selection of hand-picked hits.
According to information Oyun Günlüğü obtained from PlayStation Blog, PlayStation Store has connected players with games of all shapes and sizes for 20 years, from blockbuster adventures to indie titles. The anniversary showcase went live on November 2 at 11:00 local time. To mark the occasion, Sony asked developers from PlayStation Studios and third-party studios to pick a game from the past 20 years that surprised them. Rather than their all-time favorite, developers were asked to choose a game they enjoyed more than expected or one that won them over in an unexpected way.
From Balatro to Uncharted 2
Final Fantasy 7 Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi picked Balatro, which is built on the familiar rules of poker. Hamaguchi said he got hooked on the satisfaction of watching scores grow through progression and combinations, adding that the game reminds him why games are so much fun. Naughty Dog’s head of culture and communications Arne Meyer chose Inscryption, noting that what he thought was a creepy card game kept revealing new layers of gameplay and story at every step.
San Diego Studio’s Ramone Russell chose 2018’s God of War for its handling of themes such as fatherhood, grief and identity. Santa Monica Studio game director Bruno Velazquez said Sayonara Wild Hearts won him over with its style, story and soundtrack, even though he doesn’t usually gravitate toward rhythm games.
Other classics made the list as well. Santa Monica Studio’s Jonathan Burke picked Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age, Insomniac Games creative director Marcus Smith chose Playdead’s Inside, Team Asobi studio director Nicolas Doucet went with Shadow of the Colossus, released on PS2 in 2005, and Housemarque creative director Gregory Louden picked Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
Deals end on November 5
Some games are discounted on the anniversary page. On the US store, Inscryption is 65% off, Shadow of the Colossus is 75% off and Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition is 50% off. These deals end on November 5 at 07:59 GMT. Sony notes that prices may vary by region.
