What is the sandbox genre?

Sandbox takes its name from the sandpit in a playground: You are handed the tools and what you do is up to you. These games have no mandatory main story or single correct path. You can build something, connect systems and run experiments, or simply play with the rules of the world.

At their best, sandbox games feel less like a game and more like a toy box. The structures, mods and servers with their own rules that the community creates often outlive the game's own content.

What defines it?

You set the goal

Instead of a mandatory quest chain, you get an open-ended space.

Changing the world

Terrain, structures and objects can be changed permanently.

Systems at play

Simple rules interacting with each other produce unexpected results.

Made by the community

Mods, maps and shared builds extend the life of the game.

Frequently asked questions

Can you win a sandbox game?

Most have no ending in the classic sense. Some set optional goals or a final boss, but the real life of the game starts after that goal.

Are sandbox games suitable for children?

The best-known examples of the genre appeal to a wide age range. Still, online servers and community content can be independent of the game's own age rating, so it is worth reviewing chat and server settings.
