Musou games
A Japanese action genre built on a power fantasy, where you mow down hundreds of enemies on your own.
What is the musou genre?
Musou means peerless in Japanese, and that is exactly the genre's promise: To be a hero without equal on the battlefield. Hundreds of soldiers fill the screen at once, a single attack sends dozens flying and you scatter a whole army by yourself. The aim is not a tough struggle but the feeling of overwhelming superiority.
Under the apparent simplicity there is another layer: The battlefield is divided into areas, allied lines can fall and you have to decide where to rush and when. Behind the joy of mowing through crowds, a quiet management game is running.
What defines it?
Hundreds of enemies are on screen at the same time.
A single character is strong enough to break whole armies.

Frequently asked questions
Why do musou games look easy?
Ordinary enemies are weak on purpose, because the genre's aim is to give a sense of overwhelming power. The challenge shows up in officer-level opponents and in the battlefield falling apart in several places at once.
What else is musou called?
In English it is also known as Warriors games or one-versus-a-thousand action.
