JRPG games
The Japanese role-playing game: A tradition built on a set cast, strong storytelling and usually turn-based combat.

What is the JRPG genre?
JRPG is short for Japanese role-playing game. The difference from Western-style role-playing games is that instead of creating a character from scratch, you take over a written cast. Who the heroes are, their pasts and their relationships with each other are at the center of the story.
In the genre's classic form combat is turn-based, and party management and skill combinations are decisive. Over the years more action-leaning examples have appeared, but the shared identity remains: A strong story, a distinct art direction and a long journey.
What defines it?
You do not create the characters; you take over a group with a story of its own.
Combat classically works in turns, though action-leaning examples exist too.
Cutscenes and character relationships take up a serious share of playtime.
The main story often lasts dozens of hours.

Frequently asked questions
What does JRPG stand for?
Japanese role-playing game. In Turkish it is called JRYO, short for Japon rol yapma oyunu.
What is the difference between a JRPG and a Western RPG?
The clearest difference is character creation. In the Western tradition you build your own hero and your choices shape the story. In a JRPG you live the story of a written cast, and the narrative is more guided.
Where should I start with the genre?
If you are not used to turn-based combat, a modern release with a strong tutorial is an easy start. Most long series tell stories that stand on their own, so you do not have to start with the first game.
