MMO games
Online games where thousands of players share the same persistent world, often for years.

What is the MMO genre?
Massively multiplayer online games, MMOs for short, offer a world that does not stop when you log off. While you are away the economy keeps running, wars go on and other players keep progressing. This persistence is both the genre's greatest strength and its biggest challenge: The world does not wait for you.
Most MMOs are built on a role-playing frame. You choose a class, level up, form groups and take on big raids. On top of that, guild structures, the player economy and social order often become more decisive than the game's own content.
What defines it?
The server keeps running while you are offline.
Item prices and supply are largely set by the players themselves.
The hardest parts require coordinated teams.
Goals stretch over weeks, sometimes months.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an MMO and an MMORPG?
MMO means massively multiplayer online game and can cover any genre, from shooters to strategy. MMORPG is the role-playing form of that structure, and the most common one.
Do I need a monthly fee to play an MMO?
Not in every game. Some require a subscription, others are free to play and make money from an in-game store. It is also common for a game to change its model over time.
Can I play solo?
Most offer a large amount of story and quest content you can play alone. But the best rewards and the hardest challenges are usually found in content you take on as a group.
