What is Furnace used for?
The furnace is the block that handles all cooking and smelting in Minecraft. It is made from eight cobblestone; the stone you dig on your first night is more than enough.
Put the item to process in the top slot and fuel in the bottom slot. It turns ores into ingots, cooks meat and turns sand into glass and logs into charcoal. Every operation also gives experience.
If you only smelt ores, a Blast Furnace works twice as fast; if you only cook food, a Smoker does. Both are specialists, though: The furnace is the one block that does every job.
