What is Hopper used for?
The hopper is the cornerstone of automation in Minecraft. It is made from five iron ingots and a chest, so you can reach it after your first iron mining trip.
It takes items from the container above it (or items that land on it) and passes them to the container it faces. The direction you face when you place it matters: You cannot change it later without breaking it.
Feeding fuel and ingredients into furnaces, collecting crops from farms and item sorting systems are all built with hoppers. A hopper stops when it receives a redstone signal, which counter and sorter builds rely on.
